LIMITLESS HORIZONS IXIL
Supporting holistic education for youth in El Quiché, Guatemala.
Opportunity Tree's partnership with Limitless Horizons Ixil (LHI) allows us to support students in the highlands of Guatemala. Chajul is an indigenous Maya community where many families have limited means. Its people suffered greatly and were the victims of genocide during the Guatemalan civil war. The students we serve are Ixil Maya; if they travel more than 20 miles in any direction, people do not speak their language. Many children and youth are struggling with malnutrition. We work holistically to help students succeed in their educational goals in the face of these challenges, offering scholarships and supporting wrap-around services such as tutoring, radio story hours, and mentoring.

How do donations benefit the Ixil community?
Our program partnership with LHI supports: teacher training scholarships for female teachers, tutoring and homework support at the local library, story hour broadcasts on the local radio station, a fellowship for emerging youth leaders, and mentoring and student support for students at the newly opened Colegio Horizontes (Horizons High School), which LHI runs.
LHI takes research-based strategies for education and social-emotional development, and has a proven track record of student success. It places a special emphasis on serving girls and women because of their subordination in traditional culture, but they also serve boys and young men. Best of all, LHI has a "wrap-around services" approach, providing supports that give young people what they need to succeed. This approach involves their families and the larger community.
